I went down to Santa Cruz for the Surf City CX Haloween Madness to officiate some cross races.  What a fun time!!  There was a great vibe to the whole event, Sabine does a fantastic job.

The Racing was exciting to watch and to score, with many strong performances from the Roaring Mice crew, topped by Bergen's 2nd and Hanks 3rd places.

The Costume Race was Out-o-Hand Fun!  "Running of the Bulls" was the coolest costume idea, and the nacho libres (there were many) all battled in the homestraightaway, undetterred by the "police" or even "jesus" who ended up getting his ass kicked.  Not sure how Bev kept her long dress from being ripped to shreds by her rear wheel, or how Hank kept that wee little towel around his waist lap after lap, or how Paule maintains his hetero status despite repeated and disturbing displays of cx dressing, he really seems to like putting on women's clothes and shaking his arse!  ick.

Looking forward to this weekend's BASP race at Candlestick Point, where another epic chapter will be written in the Dane vs. PPH vs. the rest of the masters field saga.

And it is forecast for Rain!!!!!  See you all there.

Please drive carefully.

Ed Farrar, father of pro cyclist Tyler Farrar, was riding his bike yesterday morning when he was struck head-on by a motorist who accidentally veered into the opposing lane. Ed suffered a serious spinal injury and is still being treated at the hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with him today.

I heard this news just after my morning commute, and I immediately found myself moved to call my mom and dad to ask them to drive safely today. I had a good chat with my dad, who lives in Illinois and rides his bike frequently on rural roads near his home. Dad was incredibly supportive after Matt’s death earlier this year; he couldn’t be at the memorial ride, but he sent me a text message that day to say that he was riding his own memorial in Matt & Kristy’s honor.

This seems as good an opportunity as any to say to whoever is listening: Please drive carefully today and every day. Remember that you are not alone on the road. That bike rider, that pedestrian, that motorist that you are sharing the road with- remember that he is somebody’s brother, somebody’s son, somebody’s father.

Tour de Cupcake

The Bike Kitchen is pleased to present the first ever Tour de Cupcake on October 19th, 2008.

TDC is an alleycat style race designed for riders of all types. We strongly encourage both novice and seasoned racers from all parts of the biking community to come out and enjoy a day of biking in the city and intense cupcake eating! In this race, riders will be required to stop at roughly 10 checkpoints. Each checkpoint will supply cupcakes to racers, and each cupcake eaten will equal a time deduction from the rider’s total race time. In this race, cupcakes are the great equalizer. You may not be the fastest rider, but if you’re hungry enough, you can win! If you ever thought about racing, make this your first one.

Race to win or just for fun. Afterparty hosted by Gestalt Haus (riders drink for free) where new BK t-shirts and hoodies will also be for sale. More info about our move and the race is availalbe at www.bikekitchen.org. All proceeds support our $50k fundraising goal for the move into our new space on 18th and Florida in Jan. 2009.

Great news: Shelley’s BMC was found yesterday.

2008
09.30

Roaring Mouse in-law and friend Shelley Olds’ (sister of our own Jake Olds) recently had her new BMC track bike stolen.  This is a major blow as it was taken from her car in Gilroy just two days before Nationals.  Her bike is very distinctive, not only because of the expensive and unusual frame and parts, but because of the small size.  If you happen to see it for sale on craigslist or eBay please notify Nicola Cranmer (below).

Other common places stolen bikes of all kinds turn up in the Bay Area are in San Francisco near Market and 6th, under the 4th and 7th st. freeway entrances, and at the Ashby Flea Market at Ashby BART in Berkeley (weekends 7am-7pm).  Please keep an eye out and help Shelley get her bike back.

NATIONAL TEAM RIDER SHELLEY OLDS’ BIKE IS STOLEN TWO DAYS BEFORE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN PREPARATION FOR WORLD CUP
September 30, 2008 – Grave misfortune has struck within the PROMAN
Women’s Professional Cycling Team and UCI Professional Track Team.
Shelley Olds determined this morning that her bike was stolen from her
car in Gilroy, California, Her car was parked in a driveway near the
Eagle Creek Golf Course.

“I love that bike,” explained Olds, shaking her head in disbelief. “You
work hard to get yourself set up on a bike, then you get used to it and
grow to appreciate everything about it. It wouldn’t be quite the
tragedy it is if not for Track National Championships just two days
away. I don’t know yet what I’ll do. We hope to recover the bicycle and
I am offering a reward”

Bike Specs:
BMC Trackmaster 47cm Carbon frame, Cane Creek 50mm Carbon wheels, white
Ritchey Syncros stem, 38cm FSA Bars, Dura ace 165mm cranks, gold Izumi
Chain

“This is especially painful since one of the most important races of
Shelley’s career is just two days away,” explained Nicola Cranmer,
General Manager of PROMAN Women’s Professional Cycling Team. “But it’s
also a terrible misfortune because BMC had the frame flown in from
Switzerland especially for Track Nationals and the UCI World Cups and
all of our sponsors have been so generous in their support of our team,
and our staff has worked so hard to get all of Shelley’s equipment
dialed in and has maintained it so that it has worked flawlessly over
the past two years.”

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Shelley’s bike,
please contact Cranmer at the above phone number or email. The team is
happy to support efforts by the police to pursue perpetrators, but will
also gladly recover the bike, no questions asked. A reward is offered.
