The 4th annual Supermarket Street Sweep set a record high on Saturday, December 5th, gathering nearly four tons of food to donate to the San Francisco Food Bank. The SMSW is an alley-cat race in which racers rush across the city to either gather as much food as possible (often on cargo bikes) or check in and gather food from the a predetermined set of grocery stores the fastest. Racers compete for prizes donated from several dozen well-known sponsors, but more importantly the entire haul of food goes to help feed the hungry.
Organized by Jenny Oh and an army of other volunteers, the SMSW is possibly one of San Francisco’s largest alley-cats drawing racers all the way from L.A. The top rider in the cargo category this year brought in over 300lbs of food alone.
Here are more photos from the event as well as coverage on the SF Food Bank blog.
